No More Round Pegs In Square Holes

By Benjamen Johnson

Rectangular Nail Set

Porta-Nails sells this rectangular set to finish driving their flooring nails and staples, but if your finish nailer has ever left a few nails proud of the surface — and you’ve wondered, “How do I drive a rectangular nail head with a round set?” — you might recognize this tool as a solution to the problem.

Normally you pick a nail set with a diameter that’s the best match for the size of the finish nail head. Too big and you leave a larger hole than you need; too small and it’s harder to drive the nail. With rectangular heads, you can either pick a set that’s too big, and leave a larger and more visible hole, or you pick one that’s too small, and struggle more than you should to hide the nail head.

It’s a bit more expensive than other nail sets at $14, but frankly with more and more finish nails coming from nail guns, I don’t know why there aren’t more of these type of sets on the market.

A few licks with a file on a round punch will achieve that same result

    Personally, I used a standard blade screwdriver. ’bout $1.50 at HF. What? Like you’ve never misused a tool… Don’t judge me… ;)
