Digging With Rambo Style

Last year about this time we made a joke about the Rambo styling of a certain garden spade from Garrett Wade. This year a new contender may take the Rambo-gardening title: this Japanese digging knife. We don’t doubt that it’s handy — it looks like it could cut up some dirt, or fend off a tribe of deadly ninjas, without much trouble.
Jokes aside, this is a pretty serious “Digging Tool.” It features a wood handle and a 6-3/4″ long, serrated, stainless steel, forged blade — for cutting through roots. The back side (underneath) curves slightly, so you can scoop with it, and it comes with a shiny case so you can keep it in reach or, more realistically, freak out the old lady next door.
Street pricing is reasonable at around $30. But I’m waiting for the digging katana to come out next year.

unless there’s a fish hook and line stored in the grip somewhere, and a compass attached, it’s not rambo style.
In other words, it’s completely useless when you fall off a cliff and rip open your bicep on a tree limb.

I’ve got one of these that was giveen to me by someone that hadn’t taken great care of it and let a really light coat of rust form in spots. A bit of naval jelly and some oil, a quic re-sharpen and it’s fast become my favorite gardening tool. I’ll definitely replace it when this one gives up the ghost (which doesn’t look to be happening any time soon). The thing I like most is that it’s pretty versatile, I can dig holes quickly, cut roots/vines, cut twine to tie up plants, etc. with just this one tool. My neighbor was pretty startled by me one night when I was carrying it out to the garden though. Sigh…
