From the Flickr Pool: Bedroom Combo Project

We like reader Wattsei’s bed project because he incorporated storage in a normally under-utilized area of the bedroom. But he didn’t just make some drawers to store socks in — he built each drawer to hold 4’ x 4’ pieces of art and up to 240 lbs of stuff.
Functional and relatively inexpensive to build — we see no downside here. Plus he made it for his girlfriend, so he earns points in that department as well. Somebody’s thinking.

I see one downside- where’s the boxspring? That bed is probably pretty uncomfortable to sleep on.

Depends on how you like your mattress. I personally prefer a very firm mattress, and my bed hasn’t had a proper box spring for years, ever since I broke it practising the Fosbury Flop in middle school. I built a new “box spring” out of 3/4″ plywood and I sleep much better now than I did before. It was like getting a whole new mattress for $20 in materials.
That’s not the sort of thing I’d do without having tried the mattress on the floor for at least a couple of weeks first to make sure I (or the person I was building it for) would be satisfied with the different feel, however.

Thanks Chris. I was just going to mention that my girlfriend prefers the firm mattress. The bed surface is a sheet of 3/4 plywood that sits into the platform frame.

Nice work Rich. I’m in the process of building a Murphy bed myself. May I ask how you stained/finished it?

When I was in college, our dorm bunks consisted of a mattress 3″ thick on top of a spring that looked like chain link fence. They had a lot of sag so I put a sheet of half inch plywood under my mattress. Made it much nicer to sleep on.
One summer, I spent a month at Christopher Newport University in Newport News and the dorm rooms had beds like the one in the pic but without the storage. Just a 4″ mattress on top of a wood box. Was suprisingly comfortable to sleep on.
