+! on Case and Queen. As an added bonus, both are big collector’s items and will actually build value if you take care of them. SOG is another quality USA based knife maker. I carry a Case knife around that is older than I am and will probably be passed down to my children. You could buy a $20 knife every two years, or buy a $60 knife once.

Like other tools discussed here, I’m afraid there’s no way around the China thing. Grant65 is probably better versed on prices than I am, but I haven’t found anything with a Case name on it around here for less than $40, and that was at the Case closeout store at the nearby outlet mall. You get what you pay for, but a knife is a disposable asset, prone to being lost, stolen, borrowed and not returned, etc. I’ve already lost one bone handled family heirloom. That won’t happen again.

If you are prone to losing pocketknives and worry about the cost this may be O.k. If you are looking for a better quality knife then stay away. The Chinese knives (which this one is) quality is very hit and miss. For the mid to upper $20 range you can get a Case that is made in the U.S. Case knives aren’t perfect but definately better than the Far East imports. Prices range from mid 20’s for a work knife up to $40-60 range for most bone handled knives. Queen cutlery also make very nice pocket knives most of which use D2 tool steel and are also made in the U.S.
If you are looking for the lowest cost for something decent then check out some of the Buck knife imports (less than $20 at Walmart). Their quality seems to be more consistant and at least the profits go to Buck who still makes many of their knives in their new factory in Idaho.
