Thanks for the link - the other Gary Katz articles look interesting too. Maybe as an old-school plumber I haven't been keeping as up to date on the on the carpentry part of my business.

This was actually on a recent episode of This old House (or maybe Ask TOH) I had just figured it was a European only model that they gave Tom to show off with.

We have 18 miter saws - Bosch and Makitas and so a lot of high-end finish carpentry - along with our mainstay plumbing work. On big jobs we set up about 3 miter saws, a dedicated dust collection systems to cover them plus a table saw, planer and portable jointer. Usually this is a bit of cobbled together pipe and hose leading back to the bag-filters. We have a bit of end-of day clean-up - but I'd have to see a big productivity or safety gain to justify this tool. I also suspect that the dollar versus Euro issue has something to do with the price. Once it gets into use, maybe Toolmonger can see if real commercial users have something to say about it - or Maybe Tom Silva on TOH will have one to show off. with his other Festool products.

Im skeptical about how well the dust collection system will work. Miter saws typically have poor dust collection because when you start a cut in large stock and are cutting smaller stock, the actual cutting action can be some 5-6 away from the dust collection shroud. So unless you're moving huge volumes of air with the DC, the sawdust ends up flying all over the place

Is there another mitre saw out there with this level of adjustability -- especially the variable speed features -- and dust collection setup for substantially less money? Because if there is, I'm interested.

I think the target market is contractors -- especially remodelers. When a guy has to spend an hour a day cleaning up sawdust, spending $1300 for a saw with excellent dust collection that cuts the time in half is worth every penny.

I really don't get the target market for Festool, especially the price point. It's like they are designing wood working tools for uber-rich yuppies that live in apartments... or Clark Griswold's neighbors in X-mas vacation.

I recognize that the stuff is neat and very multi functional, but $1300? Am I missing something?
