I have one of their older models and I have to prop it upright on something, anything, if I want it to heat well. They do have their uses but can't seem to hold their heat in cold weather, particularly if there's any wind. I've found a cheap BBQ lighter (the kind that blow like a propane torch, not the ones that work like a cigarette lighter) can work better if you are soldering wires outside in windy conditions and don't need to worry about burning other stuff nearby. BTW: Please don't take one of these into an attic. If you drop it down a wall, boy will you be sorry because they don't shut off until they run out of fuel. For this reason we banned the use of them in our security system installation company. An electric one can be retrieved by the cord, and many trigger operated torches will shut off the minute you put them down or drop it. I really like the stand-up base! Usually by the time I can get mine lit, I could grab a pencil iron and an extension cord and heat electric iron.
