Get Bent: Buy A Swan Neck Chisel

Swan Neck Chisel

How do you make the bottoms of mortises flat and clean? You buy yourself a swan neck chisel! Instead of striking it with a mallet, you leverage this specialty-tool’s bend against the side of the mortise to scrape out the bottom.

Henry Taylor Tools offers swan neck chisels in 1/4″, 5/16″, and 3/8″ sizes, and Lee Valley Tools sells the 1/4″ and 3/8″ chisels for $28 and $35 respectively.
