A Muffler For Your Dust Collector

By Benjamen Johnson

Suppressor Dust Collector Muffler

Believe it or not, your dust collection system doesn’t have to sound like a 747 taking off every time you fire it up. The Supressor dust collection muffler won’t reduce the noise to a quiet whisper, but it can help reduce it to a more bearable level. Penn State Industries claims the Suppressor can reduce up to 50% of the noise from a typical dust collector.

The easily-installed Suppressor fits between the blower and dust bags of any collector with a 5″ diameter blower to bag connection — which includes most 1-1/2 to 2 hp double bag collectors. Acoustic insulation provides the sound deadening inside the 12″ long by 11″ diameter cylinder.

Is a quieter shop worth the $80 Penn State Industries charges for the Suppressor? Well, let’s put it this way: if you need hearing protection just to use your dust collection system, maybe it’s time to take a serious look.

You can even get a muffler for your shop vac.

I bought that exact item for my Rigid shop vac. To my naked ear it did absolutely nothing. Took it back to HomeDepot and got my $13 back.
