Tool Pr0n: A $900 Sledge Hammer

The AMPCO 7920 German-type sledge hammer will run you $900 on Amazon. Believe it or not, this 23.79 pound — when you pay almost $40 a pound you want to be accurate – German-type sledge serves a practical purpose. Its non-sparking, non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant, beryllium free head meets OSHA and NFPA requirements for use in hazardous, flammable, or combustible environment. So you can break s#!$ just about anywhere.

If that isn’t enough to make you run out and buy one right now, AMPCO’s offers a lifetime warranty. (They don’t specify whether that lifetime is the tools or yours, though. We hear toxic waste can sting.)

Don’t forget to read the reviews on Amazon as you rush to purchase this sledge — they’re quite amusing.

I only want to know one thing…

Why is it important that it’s beryllium-free?

  2. Benjamen Johnson Says:

The only reason I can find is Chronic Beryllium Disease. Beryllium is a toxic metal, and in it’s pure form can be dangerous. There is little proof it is dangerous when it is in an alloy, but then again Jenny McCarrthy can claim on Nnational TV that Thimerisol (mercury compound) in vaccines made her kid autistic even though there is zero scientific proof.

  3. Perry Jones Says:

Beryllium dust is a health hazard, and chipping beryllium tends to produce an airborne dust. The amount of beryllium in a beryllium-copper alloy is low, but a sledge head is prone to chipping.

The real health risk of using a beryllium-copper sledge isn’t clearly established, but I’d bet it’s pretty low. Using an aluminum-copper sledge instead is cheap insurance.
