This tool set really is a good deal for beginner DIYers when you think about it. Beginners typically aren't aware of brand reputations or what to look for in a tool, or even which tool a particular job calls for. This set simplifies the tool selection process, and if they use the tools, a beginner might break them or realize their shortcomings and upgrade.

While I chose to build my tool selection on a piece by piece basis, there are quite a few people to whom I might recommend this set.

Often a beginner is on a limited budget though, so with that in mind, I'd recommend something like this smaller Crescent-branded set: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000E0P70E/. While these aren't going to be the best tools either, they might be more durable, and the sub-$70 price allows for one to supplement the basic tools with better quality ones as they're needed.

Eschoendorff's right. $270 will buy a lot of tools at Sears, (or Lowes), especially during the Labor Day weekend sales. You never know how long it'll be till you can upgrade from a starter set. Better to start with Craftsman or Kobalt.

Meh.... have you ever used Grip tools? They are not even the finest "made in China" tools out there. For safety's sake, please just take the $270 and buy a decent Craftsman set.
