I used to work at the now defunct Woodworker's Warehouse so I got to test almost all the tools at one time or another. At the time I bought it, (about 5 years ago) the Panasonic had the best battery life, power, and weight. Also the ratcheting chuck then was pretty neat. I still really like it. If I had to do it again I would of got the 12 v instead of the 15.6. The 12 volt had all the same features and was lighter. My batteries for what I do last more than a day, so the weight issue overrules battery life. I've had a chance to fool around with the new Makita 18v Li-Ion, and I have to say I like the weight of it. It is so light and powerful, but it feels almost fake how like it is. I bought one off of amazon last year for $175 and it is the best money I have ever spent. The torque is almost dangerous, battery life is incredible and the unit is so light and small you can fit it into places other guns can't even venture. Consumer reports rated it above all (almost all?) 18v guns and it is far and away the best power tool I have ever used. My personal belief (as a mechanical/electrical engineer) is that the tool is superior because they use a higher grade gearbox. Most toolbox gearboxes are rather inefficient with cast gears. This one has the feel of one with ground or hobbed gears. Also, panasonic makes the cells inside most commercial batteries so they know a thing or two about them. Sorry for the rant, but I love it.
