Make Precision Cuts With Bosch’s Finecut Power Handsaw

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

post-finecut.jpg

When a job is too detailed for a recip saw and the wrong shape for your jigsaw, you’re not always out of luck.  Bosch’s Finecut power handsaw (at least partially) fills the gap.  Its variable-speed motor oscillates the attached sawblade between 2,000 and 2,800 RPM to make fine and/or flush cuts in wood or plastics.

post-palmsander.jpg

We’re putting together a palm sander comparison for later this year and we thought we’d start by asking you which models you like the most so we can try to include them in the testing.

We have our own preferences, of course, but we’d love to hear your thoughts.  Let us know what you like — and why! — in comments.

Tips On Hanging Wallpaper

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

post-wallpaper.jpg

Like chess and racquetball, the procedure for hanging wallpaper is deciptively simple and remarkably difficult to master.  Thankfully the folks over at This Old House took the time to pump New York pro wallpaper hanger John Gregoras for his best tricks, acquired over his twenty years of installing the sticky stuff.

From layout to assembling your shopping list to actual installation, this is a great how-to post loaded with photos.

Dealmonger: Skil-14.4 Volt Drill with Stud Finder

Skil-14.4 Volt Drill with Stud Finder

Overstock isn’t somewhere I normally go for tools, however this reconditioned 14.4V Skil drill with a detachable stud finder for $35 caught my eye.  The drill isn’t exactly feature-laden with a single-speed transmission variable from 0-700 RPM, six torque settings, and a 3/8″ keyless chuck.  But when you consider $35 buys you a drill and a stud finder, it sounds better.  The charger, battery, double ended driver bit, and carrying case are also included.

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007
post-dremelcontour.jpg

Sanding curves can be difficult — especially if you want to use a power tool.  That’s where Dremel’s contour sander comes it handy.  A variety of contour shapes and detail pads fit into its grip, which then oscillates at 4,000 to 10,000 strokes per minute to do the hard work for you.

One Mean-Looking Hacksaw

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007
post-hacksaw.jpg

Pat writes: “I bought the Nicholson 4-In-1 Pro Series hacksaw for my father after his old hacksaw gave out, and he has been pleased.  I decided to pick one up for myself as well and have found it to be a quality product so far.  It’s one of the more solid hacksaws I’ve seen.  I’m pretty sure you could even use it to pry in a pinch.”

This beam cutter attachment from Prazi enables your standard circular saw to rib lumber up to 12″ thick — perfect for making single pass cuts of beams, posts, and logs.  The attachment installs with three bolts and doesn’t require you to remove any existing saw parts, so it converts back just as quickly.

Dealmonger: Grill Sale At The Great Indoors

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007
post-grillsale.jpg

The Great Indoors — known to insiders as Sears’ “upscale” home centers — are running a sale on grills right now, with up to 20% off some Kenmore and Kenmore Elite grills.  I’ll admit that I’m more of a simple charcoal guy, but if you’re looking for higher-end gas grills (read: multi-burner stainless), some of the Kenmores offer pretty good value.

The link below connects you to a search for grills on the Great Indoors website, but be warned: the Great Indoors website is notoriously bad at returning full results.  You’ll probably have better luck visiting the stores themselves.

This Father’s Day Give The Gift Of Foose

Chip Foose created a special section on his Foose Design website chock full of items perfect for Father’s Day gifts, including numerous posters of his sweet rod drawings, some T-shirts, and the Overhaulin’ DVD pictured above.  If you’re buying for the tool guy who’s already got every tool he wants, this might fill the bill.

Task Force’s Fire Drivers

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007
firedrivers.jpg

Behold the power of flames: this plain ‘ole 7-piece set of Task Force screwdrivers isn’t remarkable in any way except that they have red and yellow rubber flames on the handle.  Yes, this is a shameless gimmick and a sorry attempt to part us with $12.  The only trouble is that it works – every time.

Why Doesn’t Ryobi Still Make The Wood Drilling System?

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

post-ryobidrill.jpg

I knew a guy who had one of Ryobi’s special woodworking drill presses — known as the WDP1850 “Wood Drilling System” — back in the day, and I can’t help but wonder why Ryobi stopped manufacturing it.  With a “VersaTable” base that tilted for angled work and an accurately-marked fence, this was a true woodworking drill press as opposed to a re-purposed metal drill.

But it’s gone.  Amazon lists it but no sellers offer it.  Ryobi doesn’t mention it on their product page.  I even struck out checking eBay for one.  Maybe I’ll give Craigslist a look next.  It seems to me that this would fly off the shelves at Home Depot if it was priced halfway reasonably.

If you run across one, drop a comment.  If I’ve got the cash, I’ll jump on it, or if I’m too slow, I’m sure one of our readers would be interested.  And if you owned one of these, I’d love to hear your comments about it, too.

Dealmonger: Highway Emergency Toolkit for $20

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007
post-deal.jpg

Northern Tool always has a selection of stuff on sale, and this set of Motor Trend branded tools caught my eye.  For twenty bucks plus shipping, you get a power pack, an inverter, and a compressor – each of which would normally fetch that price alone – plus a spotlight and rescue hammer.  The quality’s probably not stellar, but if it works once, it was worth the price!  Shipping is around $15 for this nineteen-pound pile of toys.
