As for a corded hammerdrill, I have my old-faithful craftsman that's over 20 years old and still going strong. Within a year all of them had failed under journeyman use. We replaced these with Hilti and Milwaukee products and they were bulletproof for many years. Bottom line: There's a major difference in hammerdrills where quality is concerned as the internals of this tool take a severe beating. The better ones have harder percussion rates, hardened gears, and tougher motors. Having said that, I bought a 1/2" Makita Hammer Drill for my own home use knowing it would likely never be severely put to the test. Even if it doesn't have the longest lifespan (though it seems very solidly built and durable) it was only 80 bucks and when you need a hammerdrill you really need a hammerdrill.
