We hope you enjoyed the giveaway as much as we did, and I’m sure we’ll do something similar in the future.

It’s Just Cool: Seriously Shiny Diamond Plate Cabinets

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007
diamondplatecabinets.jpg

Admit it — you love shop bling just as much as the next guy.  Forget platinum and gold, though.  This is diamond, baby, (diamond plate, that is) and lots of it — enough to form an 8′ work bench complete with cabinets.  The picture doesn’t really do it justice; this thing is 8′ long, 22″ deep, and over 6′ high.

Doh! QVC Salesman Demonstrates Ladder, Busts Ass

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

doh1.jpg

This is one of those moments that you just don’t want to laugh at because you know damn well that you’re next if you do.  But hey – if you’re going to demonstrate a ladder on TV,why not avoid climbing so far above the top of the ladder and use both hands when you’re decending?

It’s just a suggestion.

Hot or Not: Fast Orange Hand Cleaner

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007
hot-or-not3.jpg
fastorange.jpg

When I work in the shop, I get dirty.  I’ve known guys who could wear white while rebuilding a Chevy 350 diesel, but I’m not one of ‘em.  I end up with s#!$ on my hands, arms, and sometimes even my face (depending on how itchy my nose is.)

To get it off, I’ve always used the famous tub of orange grit pictured above.  But after cleaning up in the shop this morning, I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe I’m missing the boat.  I’ve seen guys use the pink liquid (like you find in the restrooms at the ballpark), Lava soap, and even plain, old-fashioned dish soap.

So I thought I’d ask all you Toolmongers what you think.  Is the Fast (and furious) Orange goo the hot ticket, or is there a great cleansing product of myth and legend that I’m missing?

Let us know in comments.

Giveaways: Irwin’s Ultimate Tradesman Challenge

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007
post-irwinutc.jpg

Measure, mark, and drill a piece of wood faster than anyone else in the US, and you might take home $1.26 million — or at least $10k, a Roush Racing customized F-150 pickup, and a BBQ party at your house with NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray.  (That’s him in the picture above doing his best with a drill.)

Here’s the skinny: You’ve got to visit a “local retailer or industrial distributor” on one of these scheduled dates to participate.  Once there, Irwin will time you as you measure, mark and drill.  The 45 fastest “tradesmen” overall will pick up two NASCAR race tickets and an Irwin pit crew shirt.  The top 30 will also receive airfare and accommodations to one of the three regional challenges to be held in Dallas, L.A., and Charlotte, NC.

The Rock-It Drum Dolly: All Gain, No Pain

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007
drumroll.jpg

This cleverly-designed drum dolly lets you rock a drum from standing to horizontal with almost no effort, then wheel it around and put it back down — or drain liquid out of it in the horizontal position.

It’s totally one of those “why didn’t I think of that” tools, and its real beauty lies in the simplicity of its design and function.  Roll the Rock-It (on its caster wheels) up to a drum and its dolly-style lip slips right under the drum.  You can then hold the drum to the rails and tip the dolly forward.  The Rock-It’s curved steel bars roll the drum into the horizontal position smoothly with hardly any effort, then cradle it there for use or transport.

Lee Valley’s Tool Bucket: Bigger Than The Bucket Boss, No More BYOB(ucket)

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007
post-toolbag2.jpg

Michael writes: “I got my April Lee Valley catalog and noticed this ’special buy.’  It’s a little bigger than the Bucket Boss (12″ in diameter and 15″ tall vs. the Boss’s 10″ and 14″) and a little cheaper, but it has less pockets.  One interesting thing about this one is that you don’t need to buy a separate bucket.”

“FYI, I have a Bucket Boss that I keep my vintage wrenches in.  I bought it to use on job sites, but ended up preferring to use tool bags mainly because stuff was always falling out of the outside pockets.  So, of course, I’m tempted by this one, because it’s different.”

“Yeah, I’m a tool junkie.”

Ford Recalls 37,000 Diesel Super Duty Trucks

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007
tm-news.jpg
post-fordsuperduty.jpg

CNN is reporting that Ford announced a recall yesterday of “over 37,000 of its new 2008 model F-Series Super Duty trucks after reported tailpipe fires in the diesel version of the pickups.”  From CNN:

“Ford said it had received reports of three cases where leaking fuel or oil ignited when trapped in a diesel particulate filter near the tailpipe of the new trucks.  In one case in Texas, a truck’s hot tailpipe set off a grass fire when the driver pulled off the road.”

Considering how popular the Super Duty models are as work trucks here in Texas, I’d imagine more than a few Texas dealerships’ll be seeing these in the near future.

tm-update-2.jpg

A few happenings here at TM we want to share:

Hands On Week

For those of you who love tool tests — and who doesn’t? — you’re going to love next week.  We’re designating next week “Hands-On Week” with a new hands-on post each day for seven days starting on Monday.

(Now you know why we’ve been spending so much time out in the shop testing tools.)

Some of the tools scheduled: an angle grinder that doesn’t slow down much under load, a kick-ass tap and die set, an affordable air compressor complete with air tools, and a drill off the pages of GQ.

Show Us Your Shop

We’re seeking more pictures of reader shops.  You’ve seen our shop — now show us yours!  Send us a link to your photos via the contact us page.

New Podcasts

If you haven’t noticed yet, Toolmonger’s podcasts are back in a big way with new episodes of Tool Talk and One Beer Projects out this week and every week.  This week our friend Joe Brown from Wired magazine joined us in Tool Talk to cover the “top five” (as selected by you) and we cover ceiling fan installation in 1BP.
