[...] Mel E., in response to our recent attache tool case Hot or Not, recommends the Custom LeatherCraft 75-pocket tool backpack — an interesting alternative. The manufacturer claims it’ll hold a pretty complete set of tools, and it’s got to be easier on your arms than a standard bag.
I've been using an early-model Targus laptop backpack for my tools and crap, and it does fairly well, sorta. The weight isn't a big deal for short hikes, and I can mostly fit things in wherever. The main pocket is big enough for a Bernz-O-Matic trigger-start torch with the tank attached, poking out the top. :)

It's not exactly organized on the inside, however. The pockets are sized for PC cards and CDs, and lots of papers. Most of my tools ride in the generic "accessories" velcro-flap pouch, and I just dig through when I need something. The paper-organizer parts do an admirable job of keeping coiled cables from tangling, so that's cool.

Just looking at the backpack in this post, I think it wouldn't necessarily fit my tools any better. I don't travel with a full set of combination wrenches, and I'm hard-pressed to see how those pockets would be useful for much else. The strap for securing the power drill is pretty slick, though.

It would be useful to take a few different "standard tool load-outs" and try them in each box/bag/whatnot that comes along. Come up with results like "this handles the handyman and tower tech sets quite nicely, but falls flat with the PC tech's smaller tools." Hmmm...
