I'd need to buy a power converter for this to use it. When they say 'for use in the shop' how do they plan on powering it? Do most people have a 12v power supply sitting in their shop? Maybe I'm just the odd-man-out on this.

I bought one of these from Canadian Tire here in Ontario. I use a winch to raise and lower my snow blade on my ATV. The switch burned out after a couple of months. The current going through the switch is too great for the design. The contacts were pitted and scored so badly, it would not work. I used my dremel to clean the contacts to get it running again. During the summer I will look into a better switch.

A friend of mine used a 120 VAC version to build a little "overhead rail lift" over his lathe to simplify chuck changes as back problems make it harder for him to lift the chucks.

My first thought was that this could really easily be adapted to an overhead lifting system for a garage or workshop, but the 12v puts a serious cramp in that idea--at least for me.
