Stuey's right, Craftsman tape measures are no longer lifetime warranted. Check the warning card posted near the display or ask a sales type for the new rules. A large part of this is due to Katrina. Contractors flooded, (no pun intended), the South and pretty much cleaned out all the Sears stores. Customers couldn't buy a tape measure along with several other things due to lifetime guarantee exchanges. Ergo, tape measures, among other stuff is no longer covered. Might not be right, but that was Sear's solution.

The packaging doesn't have the same wording as Craftsman hand tools. It says if the tape meaasure is defective in materials or workmanship, you can return it or replace it. But it specifically says that the blade is not covered by the warranty.

I highly doubt that they'll give anyone problems, but the linked comment string makes me think I'll have to choose my words carefully if I do ever go in for a replacement.
