I agree with a number of you.. I've got a Home Depot that just opened about 2 miles from me. It's great - open 24 hours, blah blah blah..
But I have an old family owned hardware store that's been in town for three generations. There hours are more limited (closed Sundays, etc.) But when I have a question about something, I usually go there. Chances are I could get the same toilet tank part, or faucet washer set from Home Depot for less, often times much less.. But it's just not worth the hassle and aggravation of looking for it, not knowing quite what I need, and/or trying to explain it to some snot-nosed high school kid whose never seen the inside of a toilet tank. The guys at the hardware store have been there 5+ years each. Some for as many as 20 and 30 years. And it's not just one guy. The owner is one, but he's got at least 4 or 5 other knowledgeable guys, and I'm confident that I can go in and speak to any one of them, get the answer I need, and 9 times out of 10 get the item I need. If they don't have it they can order it, or they'll point me in the right direction of where to get it. (Like a good plumbing supply for some obscure item, etc.)

I think there's a place for both. Lamentably I don't do most of my shopping at the mom and pop place, and I don't know if that's a sustainable model to help people for 10 minutes, answer all of their questions, and only make a $1.99 sale out of it. Granted I'll often spend more there, but more often than not it's of to the Depot I go. Home Depot is definitely eating their lunch, and it should be interesting to see what happens now that there's one so close. They just opened it on Feb 1, and previously there were three within 15 miles, but they involved either a rather long drive (25-30 minutes) or a toll bridge with lots of traffic, or a toll road in the other direction with lots of traffic. But now it's a 7 minute drive around a lake and you're there.

I agree - when I was building a playset, trying to find carriage bolts at Home Depot and Lowes was fruitless, but Ace had them in stock.

I agree about going to ACE for hardware. It is the first place I try for any type of fastener or hardware. And on the rare occasion they don't have what I need, they are always willing to order it for me. Long live the hometown hardware store!!!

I'm guessing that it'd be handy for, say, purchasing a ton of fasteners for a project or some dimmers for the house, etc.

My rant aside, I'm actually a fan of ACE when it comes to good 'ole hardware purchases. I was bummed when they rolled up their carpets and went home from Texas. I've got a Home Depot and a Lowe's both within a mile of me, but neither brings the associate expertise that I used to get with ACE.

Roscoe, you have a point about power tools, though. I rarely go into a store to "shop" for power tools; generally, I've already done my research and am just looking for the best price/most convenient purchase. I'd even mail-order power tools. But when I'm looking for hardware stuff, I often have questions, and I'm not quite as price-sensitive.

As much as I love to support local hardwares, you're likely to spend more by "saving" 10% at Ace on a Power Tool, than buying it elsewhere at regular cost.

Thanks for the heads up. 10% off of a powertool is probably worthwhile. Maybe my socket set gets crossed off the list on Saturday. Anyone who makes a Saturday sale purchase should regroup and post here. I am always keen to see what others choose to purchase.

Rick: That's my fault. Since it wasn't copy/paste-able from the site, I had to type it, and I was lazy.

So yes, blame them for bringing down a perfectly-interesting sale with legalese that makes it mean very little, but you can blame me for "phoen orders" and "sity stickers."
