Yeah, Randy has it down. To cut fabric, you need a big, flat ruler. Seamstresses like my mom use a huge one, which is basically a rectangular piece of clear lucite with ruler marks on it. With that securing the one side of the fabric, you can get thread-accurate cuts down the length of your fabric using a rotary cutter.

It is cold here in ND. -12 degrees this morning. And that's my camera hacking table ;). I'm working on interfacing my GPS receiver connected to my camera. The picture was taken moments before covering the table in scrap electronic gear.

I use my wife's mat all the time, but she treats it worse then I do. It has all kinds of gashes in it from repeated cuts in the same spot. They are healing, but only to an extent.

To make straight cuts on fabric, hold the edge down with a metal yardstick. Run the rotary cutter along the metal edge.

I use a smaller version of this for precision photo cutting and matte cutting. My problem is that I have a hard time holding cloth items flat against the board. Maybe my cutting board is too small.

I tried cutting tyvek sheet and it was tedious holding the piece down onto the mat and my cuts were not as straight as I would have liked. I wound up marking the pieces up with a square and using scissors to make nice cuts.

(The tyvek can be riveted together with washers and creates incredibly durable bags, tool holsters, etc.)
