Never tried one of the cheaper Gerbers - I carry a MP800 Legend, which I think is much better than most of Leatherman's offerings. Things I like about it are:
* Spring loaded handles
* Replaceable cutter on the pliers
* Good locking mechanism on all tools
* Tools can be pulled out with the pliers closed - which also means that the handles of the pliers are smooth so you can apply more force (which I see the suspension has as well)

Unlike the cheapo jigsaw, this is an area where I can't justify spending real money. Not for something that I am invariably going to lose or break. Cheapo on the power tools--probably not. But cheapo on flashlights, multi-tools, screwdrivers--things that my kids (no, not really the kids so much, but they are convenient to blame) are going to lose, or worse break--not going to spend the money in that category.
