i bought two of em, and 3 extra plates. i thought the plates, not being very deep would be better than holes through the top..also,if a position turns up, you needent set in the plate for a quickie job.

a diy ,if i could weld may have been given more thought.

I saw a great bench design. The top was made from two pieces of flattened hardwood that had the contour (curve?) of the tree (had been debarked, sawn to plank, planed and finished), in other words there were several gaps in the center of the top that a standard bar clamp could fit through, in lieu of bench dogs. It seemed like there were enough voids to be able to clamp any sort of project.

This is just a vice-grip drill press holder with a custom base instead of the old threaded stud. I've got one of these bolted through the plate on my drill press right now and it's been there for 10 years. I'm with "myself", simpler is better and a regular vice-grip holder would surely fit through a bench dog hole.

It's a shame it needs a custom mounting plate, instead of being able to wedge into standard bench dog holes. I'd imagine that a pipe-plug style mechanism, where a piece of rubber mushrooms into place to provide a tight fit, would probably work fine. (And a similar vise-grip-like mechanism could provide quick tension to the mushroom mechanism!)

I just got the latest Kreg Catalog, and saw this.
This is a great idea, and if you're ever in the position to build your own workbench, this would be awesome, even if you don't use it to drill Kreg's pocket holes.
