Jim, I've seen those lock-jaw pliers you're speaking of made by Irwin and Husky at Home Depot. My take on these kind of pliers is depending on how often you use these type of pliers. Personally for me I have a pair of vise-grips that in all likelihood will hardly be used but they're there if I ever need them and I bought them at wholesale prices manufactured by Worksaver with a lifetime warranty. My point is if you're a heavy hitter with tools then go ahead and spend that extra money for it's worth it otherwise leave it alone. A word to the wise: If you want to save a lot of money on tools get them wholesale or from Home Depot. Internet buying is very expensive and not all websites are created equal.

Have you seen the Lock-Jaw pliers, which are also quick-release, but have the added benefit of applying the same locking power no matter what size the thing you're gripping is? What I mean is, you set it once for gripping power, and then grip whatever sized object you want (rather than the Vise-Grip approach of having to set the gripping power for a specific-sized object).
