I used a tool similar to this, to suck the gear oil out of my manual trans-axle. The one I used was a clear tube with marking lines to let you know how much you have removed, or how much you added, since that is also how added the gear lube to the Tranny. I think it was only about $15. I could have used it to remove engine oil too, but I all the sludge would still be in the oil pan, & you would still need to change the oil filter. If you'll pay $40 for this just to keep your hands from getting dirty, the why not just take your car to jiffy lube.

The J fell off the sign, & it just says iffy lube now.

I picked up one of these a few years ago when I had a 2000 VW Golf 1.8T. I used it once and called it a day because I still had to get under the car to pull the filter, which was at an angle so no matter how much oil I drained out, I still ended up making a mess getting the filter changed.

I now have a 1990 BMW 535 and the filter, like many of it's contemporary bavarian brothers, is accessible from the engine bay as it sits in a filter canister. I've yet to do an oil change on this one, but I imagine I'll be bringing out the topsider for this one.

For the Miata (and any other hard-to-reach-filters), get a oil-filter relocator. They are quite well known in the community. I just wonder how much used oil this will get vs. draining the old fashioned way.
